I am so lost

I am going back to school after being a mom for several years.

Well I start soon and i dont know where to start? Do people still write in binders? Will I need a Laptop? Highlighters? Post its? I am beyond lost as to what a college student needs?

My kids are in younger grades so im assuming I dont need crayons or pencil crayons. Teehee

  1. Will need a laptop. Most modern schools don’t use paper at all..you just bring your laptop and the teachers desk scans your homework

  2. I’m 30 going back to university this will be my third year it’s very beneficial to have a separate binder for each class

  3. I’m in your place third year You need it all you absolutely need a computer and you absolutely need paper and a pen people still bring binders in their laptops along with highlighters pens and pencils literally bring everything and just add a laptop to it

I went back at 33 and took a medical program. They should let you k ow first day what you’ll need. Good luck!

  5. Congratulations on going back to college & best of luck in ur courses.

All depends on the course you’re in and how your prof teaches it. If you’re comfortable typing things out and you can follow along that way, I’d recommend a laptop but if you’re more comfortable with writing things down, I’d do it that way.
Having spare paper/notebooks and some pens would definitely be a good idea walking in so you can get a feel for what the course/program is going to be like. Keeping a binder for handouts might be a good idea as well 🙂

  7. If you are going to Cambrian, you will definitely need a laptop or a computer of some kind. Every professor now puts all the course content in an online forum called “Moodle”, which is accessed through myCambrian. You even submit your assignments there.

If you are stuck and overwhelmed and need support, come to The Learning Centre, which is in room 3024 (across from the library) and a staff tutor will be happy to help you get all the kinks worked out! Oh, and by the way…. tutoring is FREE! 🙂 Good luck!!

Use whatever you’re comfortable with! A lot of students bring laptops, and many still just use paper. Congratulations on making the decision to go back. It’s certainly not an easy thing to do and can be overwhelming. Please pm me… I can help you (and anyone else looking to return to school) along the way! ☺️

I completed a bachelor and masters after having kids. Not easy, but totally possible. Feel free to msg me for tips.. I also taught at Cambrian for a few years so I’m in the know with what’s a waste of money haha

  11. Use a voice recorder to help with the notes

Laptop would probably be beneficial for certain areas pending your course. Binders and paper and pens yes. Highlighters too. Comfortable bag.

  12. I bought a lap top because I find teachers talk fast and I can type faster then I can write. Depending on the program you’re in, I use paper to do my homework because I don’t like doing it on the computer. Also, computers are helpful if you have an e-book or you have assignments to do. I know Cambrian uses Moodle which is an online platform and the teachers typically post all their notes and lessons on it. Laurentian uses D2L and it’s the same concept. Usually binders, calculator (if you need it), pencils, highlighters and pens are all helpful

  13. It’s different for everyone…. you will need a laptop, it doesn’t have to be expensive, just something that you can type your assignments on. For me personally, I need to hand write my notes. So I do use binders, notebooks, and post-it’s. Get things that you think will help you. Congrats on going back to school!!! You got this!!

  14. I use a laptop and note books. Honestly it’s what ever you prefer.

A bit odd that you’d choose to come to shoutout to ask. Your college of choice is the one to tell you exactly what you need. Do you have any siblings you went to college? Family members? But yeah, definitely your college. And usually the proffs go over an outline and itinerary the first day. You’ll get a sheet and they’ll answer any question you have.

Their must be a course itinerary on line or coordinator you can contact . Good luck this is awesome and a big step .

  17. Omg I feel like this post was a written by me!! I’m in the same boat. Back to college after being just mom for almost 3 years. I think you should use whatever you feel comfortable with. Laptop is good for notes but I find nothing sticks better than writing notes like we used to do in school.

  18. Definitely a big calender one that you can write on with white board marker and erase.
So you can keep track of due dates for assignments so on. As a mom with a mommy brain this helps for the memory we used to have before a bunch of life hit us as an adult lmao best of luck ❤ you got this

Personally I used colouring books and highlighters..

the college can give you a list of thing needed for the course you re taking ….

  21. Paula Rennie Paula Rennie says:

The course outline should say whether or not you need a laptop.

  22. When I am in school, I write my notes out and then type them into a computer later. This way I can add to them and it doesn’t look like w 2 year old scribbled in my notebook. I have one binder per subject plus pens, pencils, etc. I have a day planner as well as a small notebook which holds all of my “to-do” lists. I also have one normal sized notebook per subject. I use color coded pens for everything. Good luck!

  23. Definately a laptop is useful, and memory sticks, a printer also will be handy, lots of computer paper and ink as well. a day pkanner book, A binder or lined paper or note books, pens and, highlighters, and post it notes,

  24. Marisa says:

Yes a binder. A laptop would be handy but that’s for homework and studying. Highlighters and post it’s work. Again for studying and working. Where are you going to school?? Cambrian offers many services to get you through the first weeks and beyond. No matter where you go look for the student services team. You are a rockstar for going back to school and will be a role model for your kids. But don’t expect perfection. You will forget things. It’s normal. Just don’t bring your kids homework bag to class. Lol. Meh but even if you do, we’ve all been there.

  25. Dont over complicate things. I returned as a mature student and can attest that is daunting. Do what makes you comfortable. If you prefer a laptop then use one or just a simple note pad.
Good luck and good for you for bettering yourself.

  26. I just got those lined paper booklets with some pens and highlighters. Sticky notes are useful but not necessary and always look elsewhere for your books before heading to the bookstore.
