BE A MAN

There’s a darkness within me, a battle of woes;
a sense that I’m worthless, wherever I go.
One step at a time, just take it slow.
Weakness they call it, I cannot show.

I try so hard; I try with my might.
A smile, a nod. Firm handshake is right.
Don’t show emotion, or they may take strike.
A constant battle. A never-ending fight.

Taught from young to be strong and tough.
No room for emotion, just take it on the cuff.
Must hold your chin high, your chest it should puff;
But sooner than later, enough is enough.

Walk with honor. Stand proud and tall.
Hold your ground and be shelter for all.
Be the foundation and support to call.
Just make sure they never see you take fall.

This darkness I speak of, the shadow of doubt;
The societal image is what’s talked about.
Suck it up they would say, men don’t cry or pout;
If you show weakness, they’ll surly take you out.

Held to a standard, of morality and stature;
Is the misguided principle, that will make a boy fracture.
Teach them now, from young so we capture;
The proper way to be a man, with principles of rapture.

So be strong I say, show that you care.
Shed a tear or two, to prove if you dare.
Young men need our guidance, they need love a support;
Teach them to follow, what’s deep in their heart.

Cry if you may and speak from within;
A true man’s image, this is where to begin.
Emotion is raw, takes courage to face therein;
Show our children the true essence of feelings;
Oh the humanity we’re in.
